What are the causes of ADHD?

ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) is a neurodevelopmental disorder which impacts the part of the brain that helps us plan, focus on, and execute tasks. The main symptoms of ADHD are inattention, impulsivity and hyperactivity.

While the exact causes of ADHD are yet to be identified, studies have shown that there is a strong genetic component and a person with ADHD is likely to have a parent or a sibling with the disorder.

In addition to genetics, scientists are studying other possible causes and risk factors including:

  • Brain injury
  • Exposure to environmental risks (e.g. lead) during pregnancy or at a young age.
  • Alcohol and tobacco use during pregnancy
  • Premature delivery

There has also been a growing body of research linking ADHD to childhood trauma and traumatic stress. Trauma and adversity can alter the brain’s structure, especially in the early developmental stages.  There is no evidence to suggest that spending too much time playing video games or consuming too much sugar causes ADHD, these factors appear to exaggerate pre-existing symptoms of the disorder.

While there is uncertainty surrounding the causes of ADHD, there is no uncertainty that the disorder can be effectively managed with a combination of medication, therapy and coping skills. At Your Best Self, we will equip you with the skills to help you manage your ADHD, and take control of your life.
